When a Dualshock Controller’s buttons break

The Dualshock 4 Controller for Playstation 4

Today, something was sent to my workbench by none other than my beloved girlfriend. Her Playstation 4 controller was having an issue where the Square button didn’t register a click unless she pressed really hard. This is a huge problem, because she alleges that Yakuza (her favorite game at the moment) basically only uses this button- essentially making it unplayable. Let’s get this.

Left to right: front frame & motherboard with midframe

Once the controller has been opened using my Ph00 bit, I’m reminded that I replaced the battery for the controller in June. Oh how time flies…

Anyway, we make our way to the rubber membranes. they were covered in cat hair and small remnants of craft supplies. Two things that are so very common in the living room.

She watched with baited breath as we cleaned the debris out of the controller. When we put the thing back together, nothing changed. The button was just as difficult to press!

upon second glance, I realized I missed an area: the contact points where the flex cable connects to the motherboard. With the contact points exposed, I used some 99% isopropyl and a q-tip to give the area a good cleaning.

I finally put it all back together and she was ecstatic to press that square button and kick some ass! All is right in the world!
